Heavy Rains and Increased Flood Risk Expected in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st); According to the Department of Meteorology, Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to continue due to the Southwest Monsoon.

Heavy rains exceeding 100 mm are possible in the Sabaragamuwa province and Nuwara Eliya district.

Heavy rains exceeding 75 mm are possible in the Galle, Matara, Kandy districts, and Western and North-Western provinces:

Nilwala River, Panadugama, and Deduru Oya are at high risk of flooding.

Kalu River and Atthanagalu oya remain in minor flood conditions.

Water levels in Maha, Kelani, Gin, and Bentara rivers are also high.

8 main reservoirs and 3 medium-sized reservoirs are being drained to manage water levels.

The National Building Research Organization has issued landslide warnings to several areas in 7 districts.

Over 34,880 people in 18 districts have been affected by the recent rains.

6 people have lost their lives and 11 have been injured.

A special discussion was held at the Disaster Management Center to address the situation.

State Minister Premitha Bandara Tennakoon announced plans to:

Develop a national program to prevent tree falls.

Implement a national policy for safe roadside tree planting.

Expedite measures to control flooding in low-lying areas caused by unauthorized constructions.
