COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka commemorated the 15th National War Heroes Day on Sunday (19) at the National War Heroes Memorial.

The commemoration was led by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also in attendance.

Military leadership from across eras gathered to honor the fallen war heroes.

Former military leaders, including Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, and Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Goonetileke, participated in the commemoration.

Following interfaith religious observances, a moment of silence was observed to remember the heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to the nation.

The ceremony then resonated with the sounds of war drums played by a combined band from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, and Civil Defense Departments.

The commemoration also saw the presence of families of the fallen, who laid flowers in memory of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country's sovereignty.
