Indefinite strike by uni non-academic staff ongoing

COLOMBO (News1st); The indefinite strike launched by university non-academic staff is ongoing for a second day on Friday (03).

The strike was launched against slashing their salaries by 15 percent and the failure to increase their monthly allowance.

Co-Chairman of the Joint Committee of University Trade Unions Dhammika S. Priyantha said activities of all universities have been disrupted due to the strike action.

He added that all academic activities and exams have been halted at present.

Priyantha said discussions have been ongoing regarding the issue for over seven years, adding that all committees appointed in this regard admitted that the allowance should be granted and the slashing of salaries was unfair.

He said however the strike was launched as the slashed salaries were not provided despite the recommendations.
