COLOMBO (News 1st); The Colombo District Court has issued an extension to the injunction preventing former President Maithripala Sirisena from acting as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party until the 9th of May.

This decision comes in response to a request made by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike, who sought a permanent injunction to remove Sirisena from the party leadership position, citing his unsuitability for the role.

During the recent court proceedings on the 4th, Chandrika Bandaranaike's legal team emphasized that Maithripala Sirisena's continued tenure as chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party violates the party's constitution.

Counsel pointed out to the court, that according to the party's governing document, Sirisena is eligible to hold the position of party chairman during his elected term but, following the end of his presidency, he assumes the role of patron.

The lawyers further argued that Sirisena simultaneously occupying the positions of chairman and patron is not in alignment with the party's constitutional framework.
