Cabinet Nod To Revise Deposits for Polls

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Sri Lankan Cabinet has given its approval for the revision of security deposits related to upcoming elections in the country.

The changes apply to the presidential elections, parliamentary elections, and provincial council local government elections.

Presidential Election:

Candidates running for the presidential election from a recognized political party will be required to submit a bond amount of Rs. 2.6 million.

Independent candidates contesting the presidential election will need to provide a revised bail amount of Rs. 3.1 million.

Parliamentary Elections:

Candidates affiliated with recognized political parties participating in parliamentary elections will have to deposit Rs. 11,000 as security per candidate.

Independent candidates forming their own groups for parliamentary elections will be required to submit a higher bond amount of Rs. 16,000 per candidate.

Provincial Council Local Government Elections:

Candidates from recognized political parties will need to deposit Rs. 6,000 per candidate.

Candidates appearing as independents in provincial council elections will be required to submit a bond amount of Rs. 11,000.

According to the Department of Government Information, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval for the joint proposal moved by the President and the Justice Minister, to direct the legal draftsman to draft the necessary legislation to introduce the said revised deposits to contest the polls.
