Sirisena Announces Wijeyadasa As SLFP's Pick for Presidential Race

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Sri Lankan President, and one-time chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Maithripala Sirisena announced that Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe will be the SLFP candidate to run for President later this year.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (1), the former president said that a majority of the SLFP prefers the candidacy of Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.

Sirisena noted that he had earlier pledged to serve as president only once.

He assured that Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe would run for President as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party candidate, and the SLFP would back his candidacy.

Maithripala Sirisena served as the President of Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2019, after he defeated two-time President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
