COLOMBO (News 1st); A solemn atmosphere enveloped the Kelaniya University following the untimely demise of a student who fell seriously ill and was subsequently hospitalized.

The incident has prompted a protest by a group of concerned students, directed at the university administration.

Venerable Tissapura Sirisumedha Thero, President of the Kelaniya University Students’ Union, expressed deep concern over the handling of the situation, noting that despite making urgent phone calls to the administration seeking assistance for the ailing student, the response received was inadequate.

One critical issue highlighted by the Student Union is the absence of an ambulance service within the university premises.

In response to inquiries, Prof. Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, confirmed that the student’s passing was due to illness.

Prof. Silva expressed profound sadness over the loss and assured that a thorough investigation is underway.

The deceased student, hailing from the Badalkumbura area in Monaragala, was in the final year of studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kelaniya University.

Currently, the body has been transferred to Ragama Hospital for post-mortem examination.
