COLOMBO (News 1st); The second day of a nationwide strike by 72 health trade unions continues to disrupt operations at hospitals across Sri Lanka, causing significant hardship for patients seeking care.

News 1st correspondents report widespread disruption, with many essential tests unavailable and patients facing extended wait times, particularly those who traveled long distances for specialized services.

Hospitals affected include Colombo National Hospital, Kandy National Hospital, Kalubowila Teaching Hospital, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, and Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

The strike began yesterday at 6:30 AM. Union members, including public health inspectors, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, and radiologists, are demanding a Rs 35,000 stipend currently only granted to doctors.

This action comes despite the government's attempt to declare health services as essential, prohibiting strikes in the sector. However, the unions maintain their stance, highlighting their dissatisfaction with current wages and working conditions.

The ongoing strike has left many patients in need of care with limited options.

In response to the ongoing strike by 72 health trade unions, Health Minister Ramesh Pathirana issued a public appeal yesterday, urging workers to understand the current economic situation and resume their duties.

The Minister acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry of Finance to develop solutions within the existing financial limitations.
