COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Police has opened an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old suspect who died while in police custody on Tuesday, January 30th.

The suspect was arrested Anuradhapura Range Criminal Investigation Division and the investigation is led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police.

According to a senior police official, the suspect, a known drug user, fell ill while detained in a police cell and later passed away at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. 

The cause of death remains unclear, and the post-mortem examination report is expected to reveal crucial details.

"The official stated that any potential police involvement will be fully investigated.

The incident occurred shortly after the suspect's arrest, along with three others, at a residence in the Anuradhapura. 

Police reported finding approximately 80 milligrams of heroin at the location.
