Committee to Protect Journalists demands unconditional release of Tharindu Uduwaragedara

COLOMBO (News 1st) - Committee to Protect Journalists said on Friday (28) that Sri Lankan authorities should immediately and unconditionally release journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara and investigate allegations. 

In a statement the Committee to Protect Journalists said QUOTE“The arrest and police beating of Sri Lankan journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara are appalling, and authorities must immediately release him and provide him with access to medical care,” UNQUOTE.

It added that authorities must hold the perpetrators of this attack accountable and ensure that journalists can cover protests without fear of reprisal.

CPJ said it contacted the Sri Lankan police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa via messaging app for comment, but did not receive any replies.

The Committee to Protect Journalists was founded in 1981 by a group of U.S. correspondents with the aim of defending the right of journalists to report the news safely and without fear of reprisal.
