Railway services crippled by strike; 20 evening trains cancelled

COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka Railways warned that 20 trains scheduled to operate on Monday (24) evening would be cancelled due to the strike launched by Railway Power-Set workers.

The striking workers said that they decided to engage in a trade union action, citing multiple demands, including the slashing of overtime payments, and delayed promotions.

They said that the strike would continue until their demands were met.

Operations Superintendent of Sri Lanka Railways M. J. Indipolage told News 1st that 11 trains that were scheduled for Monday (24) morning were cancelled.

He went on to note that the strike forced officials to cancel train services along all routes.

He added that long distance trains would operate; however, there would be delays.
