COLOMBO (News 1st) -The prevailing heavy showers over South-Western Sri Lanka is expected to reduce from Thursday (06).
But the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Met Department has issued an Amber advisory for strong winds and rough seas for several parts of Sri Lanka due to the active South-West monsoon condition.
Strong winds about (50-60) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the Central hills, Northern, North-Western and North-Central provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.
In the meantime, the National Building Research Organisation on Wednesday (05) night issued a landslide warning to the Eheliyagoda divisional secretariat of the Ratnapura district.
The landslide warnings issued to the Ambagamuwa and Nuwara Eliya divisional secretariats of the Nuwara Eliya district also continue to be in effect.
The Zonal Director of Education for Nuwara-Eliya said that schools falling under the purview of the Nuwara Eliya Educational Zone will be closed on Thursday (06) and Friday (07).
2,224 people in 10 districts have been affected due to heavy rainfall and strong winds in recent days.
The Disaster Management Centre, in its latest report said that the Gampaha district was worst affected by the adverse weather.
Strong winds have caused partial damage to 599 houses islandwide while two have been severely damaged.
Five people have also been injured owing to the detrimental weather.
