COLOMBO (News 1st); Environmentalists said several issues have arisen regarding the safety of animals that were gifted to Sri Lanka including elephants, due to the lack of stringent laws related to animal welfare.
Environmentalist Dr. Jagath Gunawardana said the animal welfare bill has not been passed thus far.
The neglect of Sak Surin or 'Muthu Raja', gifted by Thailand, is a prime example of this situation.
Dr. Jagath Gunawardana said the Animal Welfare Bill will also ensure the safety of pet dogs and cats.
When inquired by News 1st State Minister of Livestock Development D. B. Herath said measures will be taken to pass the Animal Welfare Bill promptly.
He added that the matter was also discussed with the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture.
