COLOMBO (News 1st) - It was revealed in the Parliament's Sectoral Oversight Committee on Health, that 96 essential medicines are currently being produced by the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation.

The revelations were made when the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Health convened in Parliament recently, to discuss future plans related to the country's health sector.

It was revealed that in 2022, the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation has announced 9 new types of drugs and another 20 new types of drugs are to be introduced.

Officials of the State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation have informed the committee that they are looking into the possibility of exporting the surplus medicines produced.

Attention has been focused on issues such as challenges in the distribution of medicines, problems faced when obtaining medicines through foreign aid, quality assurance of medicines, the need to regulate the price of medicines, shortage of medicines, and the shortage of human resources in the Ayurveda department.
