Dengue cases expected to rise during monsoon season

COLOMBO (News 1st); Health units said an increase in the spread of dengue can be expected with the upcoming monsoon season.

Dr. Lahiru Kodithuwakku of the National Dengue Control Unit informed the public to reduce the risk by cleaning their surroundings.

He said a decrease in dengue patients was observed in the Eastern Province adding however dengue cases continue to be reported from the Colombo and Gampaha districts in the Western Province. 

He added that nearly 50% of all dengue cases are reported from the Western Province.

Dr. Kodithuwakku said that a special mosquito eradication program will be implemented covering 12 districts on the 14th, 15th and 16th of June.

He added that it will cover 72 Medical Officer of Health areas, and will be carried out by the Health Ministry, with the support of the Police and Tri-Forces.

He said during the program dengue breeding grounds will be identified and destroyed while a public awareness campaign will also be carried out.
