Wasantha Mudalige and seven others granted bail

COLOMBO (News 1st); IUSF Convener Wasantha Mudalige and seven other activists who were arrested on Thursday (18) night during a protest, were released on bail.

The group was produced at the Mahara Magistrate's Court on Friday (19) evening, and they were released on a personal bail of Rs. 500,000/- each, and were also ordered to appear at the Kiribathgoda Police once a month.

The Student Union of the University of Kelaniya had organized a demonstration on Thursday (18) night citing that its Chairman Kelum Mudannanayake, and Activist Dilshan Harshan were in detention for 138 days.

They demanded that Sri Lankan authorities end student suppression.

The demonstration, that was scheduled to commence at 6:30 in the evening, got underway after 9:30 at night.

Sri Lanka Police, Riot Police, and Water Cannon Trucks were deployed around the University of Kelaniya and along the Colombo - Kandy main road ahead of the demonstration.

Thereafter, the university students proceeded to the Colombo - Kandy main road, and it led to a heated exchange.
