Colombo (News1st) - The Chairman of the National Election Commission (NEC) Nimal Punchihewa stated that he has written a letter to the Speaker of Parliament seeking his intervention to secure funds for the 2023 Local Government Election.

The Chairman said the letter was dispatched to the Speaker on Friday (24).

The NEC announced on Friday (24) that the Local Government Election, which was due to be held on the 9th of March, had been postponed.

"The election was postponed due to reasons beyond the commission's control," the NEC said.

The new date is to be announced on the 3rd of March.

"A request has been made to the Speaker to intervene to obtain funds from the Treasury, which are necessary to conduct the election," the commission added on Friday.
