Colombo (News 1st) - History was made at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association’s courts on Sir Marcus Fernando in Colombo this week, where the very first women’s tennis team ever to represent Saudi Arabia at an international tournament, competed in an event of the International Tennis Federation.
The 4-member team is competing at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Junior pre-qualifiers.
The 4-member team has been quite impressive and face another series of matches on Saturday. Saudi Arabia, a country known for its repressive laws and regulations on women, appears to be reforming in its sports and has allowed its girls tennis team to play internationally.
The tennis team’s participation in Colombo follows reforms that have opened up opportunities in sports for Saudi women.
The team members were extremely optimistic about the future of the sport and spoke strongly for its advancement in the international arena.
The team representing Saudi Arabia is certainly working extra hard to prove a point.
