Colombo (News 1st) - Climate change activist Greta Thunberg has been detained by police in Germany during a protest organised to stop a village from being demolished.

Thunberg and over 35,000 other protesters, according to foreign media reports, attended the protest on Saturday seeking to stop the western German village of Lützerath being demolished for the expansion of a coal mine.

The abandoned municipality is at the frontline for Germany's climate debate and is being cleared to make way for the expansion of a nearby coal mine.

It is the second time that the Swedish activist has been moved on by police this week in Lützerath, according to reports.

Police said that Thunberg was part of a group which "rushed towards the ledge" of the mine, described by officers as "steep and extremely dangerous".

Police have added that the activist was not arrested but 'carried away' and is now being held along with other protesters for identification.
