COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka's Human Rights Commission says that the regulations made under the Police Ordinance are not permissible if it impacts the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms.
In a letter to the Public Security Minister, the Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka requested that the Inspector General of Police be advised on the matter.
The letter noted that this state of affairs mainly concerns the Commission because, as expressed by Fernando J in the Jana Ghosha case, 'stifling the peaceful expression of legitimate dissent today, can only result, inexorably, in the catastrophic explosion of violence some other day......'
