President congratulates new British PM Sunak

COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Ranil Wickremesinghe has extended his felicitations on the appointment of Rishi Sunak as the UK's 57th Prime Minister.

In a release, the President has stated that the vast experience which Sunak brings into the high office would be invaluable in discharging his responsibilities. 

Pointing out that Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom enjoy a shared traditional history, the President said that he is confident that under Sunak's leadership, the ties between the two nations will be further strengthened. 

"I look forward to enhancing this partnership particularly through the 'Global Britain' policy and the UK's new 'Platinum Partnership' scheme with Commonwealth countries," he added.
