Two mosquito species identified in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The Association of Health Entomology Officials have identified two new mosquito species in the country.

Its National Organizer, Disnaka Dissanayake mentioned that one species of mosquito called Culex sintellus has been reported from Mirigama and Kalutara areas.

Previously, the same mosquito species has been reported from countries such as Thailand and India.

The other species of mosquito identified from Sri Lanka is called Culex niyainfula.

This particular species of mosquito, which is widespread in India, is a carrier of the disease called cerebral malaria.

Dissanayake mentioned that investigations are underway as to whether this mosquito species is an active vector in Sri Lanka.

He added that samples of 4 other mosquito species found in Sri Lanka have been sent to a Korean university for identification.
