COLOMBO (News 1st); Three Fundamental Rights petitions that were filed with the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka seeking a ruling that the imposition of the State of Emergency under the Public Security Ordinance violates the Fundamental Rights of the people, will be taken up for consideration on the 12th of August.

The petitions were called up in the presence of Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, and Arjuna Obeysekera on Wednesday (10).

Senior State Counsel Rajiv Goonetilleke appearing for the respondents informed the court that limited objections will be filed with respect to these petitions, and stressed that he objects to the consideration of the said petition.

The Senior State Counsel requested for the applications be called up in the presence of a three-judge bench, as the petitioners seek an Interim Injunction.

However, the counsel appearing for the petitioners noted that the applications were filed as a matter of urgency, and therefore they need to be taken up for consideration without delay.

The Attorney General on behalf of the President, Former Secretary to the President Gamini Senarath, Secretary to the President Saman Ekanayake, and Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne were named as respondents in the applications.
