UN chief congratulates President on his appointment

COLOMBO (News 1st); The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gueterres has congratulated President Ranil Wickremesinghe on his appointment, and had pointed out that his leadership would be critical in bringing stability and to usher Sri Lanka out of the current shallenges which it is facing. 

Whil welcoming the President's commitments to develop a national strategy to address the country's crisis, the UN Secretary General has encouraged diaogue among all stakeholders, including consultation with the public, as well as respect for rule of law and fundamental human rights principles. 

The United Nations remains ready to support the Government and the people of Sri Lanka to address immediate and long-term needs, he further states, adding that the Secretary General looks forward to continuing cooperation to advance peacebuilding, sustainable development and human rights for the benefit of all Sri Lankans.
