National Fuel Pass: Energy Ministry explains new system

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Energy says that the QR code-based method will be implemented from 1st of August, and the systems which were in use such as the vehicle registration number system and the token system will no longer be valid thereafter.

In a release, the Ministry of Energy stated that the QR code system will be prioritized, adding that vehicles which were unable to register with their chassis number will be allowed to use the vehicle revenue license numbers to register. 

Moreover, all three-wheelers will be required to register at police stations and provide details of their nearest filling station, which will be allocated for them. Owners of equipement which requires fuel have been advised to register at their Divisional Secretariat with the selected filling station from which they aim to obtain fuel. 

If a certain business possess multiple vehicles, all the vehicles can be registered under its business registration number.

While public transport will be prioritized, a fuel quota will be decided for buses taking into consideration their route permit and the number of kilometers travelled. SLTB depot will provide all necessary fuel requirements for school transport services, staff transport, industries, tourism-related vehicles, ambulances and other approved services. 

However, all filling stations have been instructed to prioritize ambulances, and to provide them with unlimited fuel. 

Evidence and information in connection with those who stockpile fuel illegally can be directed via Whatsapp to 0742123123, and if identified as a suspect, such a persons' QR code will also be invalidated. 

The Ministry of Energy has requested the public not to gather at filling stations on 01st of August, which would result in unnecessary congestion.
