Who brought the country to this level? - Cardinal

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith called for an investigation to be conducted into the drop in Sri Lanka's National reserves to the extent which gold reserves in the Central Bank disappeared. 

Participating in the the feast of the Church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Colombo North Teaching hospital today (24), His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated that an investigation must be conducted as to how and why this wealth of the nation was wasted.

He stated that it will answer the suffering of the people, as the people need to know who wasted these funds.

"Who took these incompetent decisions? Who supported them? For example, who decided to suddenly ban the import of chemical fertilizer? Who was behind it? The Agricultural sector of the country collapsed completely because of that decision. That decision is a reason for the situation that we are facing today," he stated.

Emphasizing that power and service are two sides of the same coin, The Archbishop of Colombo stated that power must be used to serve, as power without service is pointless.

Acknowledging that leaders are given power to make the people prosper, which is what they promised to do, the Archbishop of Colombo urged the very same leaders to conduct an investigation into these matters and find out who is responsible for bringing this country to a point where Sri Lankans are now begging, and to see if it is possible to recover this money from them.

He further stated that qualified people who have a sound minds should be appointed to responsible positions like the treasury, and the Ministry of Finance, and they should know their duties, while loving the country.

The Archbishop of Colombo stressed that responsible leaders do not appoint their friends to such positions.
