CAA hunt for traders selling rice for high prices

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka has launched an island-wide operation to detain traders who sell rice over the stipulated market prices.

It said that 12 raids were carried out recently, and three cases were filed against the selling of rice above the MRP (Maximum Retail Price) in the local market.

According to a gazette issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority, the price of a 1Kg of Nadu rice is Rs.220/-, 1kg of Samba rice Rs.230/-, and 1Kg of Keeri Samba rice Rs.260/-.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture has informed the Trade Ministry to import rice for the next four months.

The monthly rice consumption in Sri Lanka is approximately 200,000 MT, and the Director General of Agriculture said 300,000 MT rice was imported to Sri Lanka this year.
