COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was sentenced to two years in prison, and suspended for five years for the second contempt of court charge, after pleading guilty.
He was produced to the Supreme Court on Tuesday (7) for the second case filed over committing contempt of court.
The verdict was delivered by Supreme Court justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, L. T. B. Dehideniya, and Gamini Amarasekera.
Delivering the verdict Justice Aluvihare said the sentence was suspended considering the fact that Ranjan Ramanauyake pleaded guilty to the charge, and upon considering the sumbissions that were made.
Justice Aluvihare further notes that if Ramanayake is found guilty of a crime within the five year period, the sentence of 2 years imposed by the Supreme Court will be implemented.
The Attorney General filed the second contempt of court case against Ranjan Ramanayake for a comment he made on a television channel.
On 12th January 2021, Ranjan Ramanayake was sentenced to 04 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court for committing contempt of court, and he is already serving this sentence.
