COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Immigration and Emigration noted that there is a high demand for passports since the end of April 2022.

The spokesperson for the Department of Immigration and Emigration Piumi Bandara said that it is NOT possible to issue passports for every application submitted to the Department daily.

Accordingly, the maximum number of passports issued by the one-day service is 2,500.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Immigration and Emigration said the service, which runs from 6 AM to 10 PM, will issue the maximum number of passports.

As a result, there is a delay in issuing passports under the normal procedure, she further said.

The highest number of passports issued during the year was in March, and that number was 74,890.

More than 50,000 passports were issued in January, February, April, and May, the Department of Immigration and Emigration said.

The total number of passports issued in the year 2021 is 82,506.
