Shashi Weerawansa appeals against prison sentence in fake passport case

COLOMBO (News 1st); Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has filed an appeal challenging the 2-year prison sentence and fine imposed on her after she was found guilty of possessing a fake passport.

Counsel appearing for Shashi Weerawansa handed over the appeal to the Colombo Magistrate's Court to be sent to the Colombo High Court.

The appeal requests that Shashi Weerawansa be acquitted and released from all charges.

The Colombo Magistrate decided to consider a request for bail made on behalf of Shashi Weerawansa on the 30th of May, as Weerawansa had already filed an appeal challenging the sentence.

The request was called up in the official chambers of Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela on Friday (27).

Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa was sentenced to two years in prison after she was found guilty of obtaining a passport by submitting false information.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court also ordered a fine of Rs. 100,000/-, and an additional six months in prison if she does not pay the fine.
