COLOMBO (News 1st); The Oil Refinery at Sapugaskanda, which was commissioned in August 1969, met Sri Lanka’s Kerosene Demand for many decades.

However, the Sapugaskanda refinery has NOT been operational due to the dollar crisis in the country.

Due to the non-refining of kerosene, aviation fuel has to be imported instead.

The Equipment Engineer of the Sapugaskanda Refinery Janaka Wijesooriya said that the Government is spending unnecessarily on Tear Gas, Apples, Grapes, and Water bottles instead of giving priority to the Oil Refinery at Sapugaskanda.

Refinery workers also staged a protest today (26) demanding its immediate reopening and pointed out that even the equipment of the Refinery was being destroyed.
