COLOMBO (News 1st); Public servants are taking to the streets against the Government's actions regarding their salaries.

Many professionals including doctors and teachers were engaged in protests and token strikes today (26) afternoon.

A protest was organized by the officials at the Government Printer in Borella, this afternoon.

Asanga Sandaruwan, a trade union member at the Department of Government Printing said that the government is attempting to slash the salaries of public servants, at a time when many are finding it difficult to survive.

"When the banks take away the money due for loans, we are left with a little to survive," he said.

At the same time, Doctors at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital have commenced a token strike from today (26) morning.

The director of the hospital Dr. Shelton Perera stated that the doctors stepped away from their duties from 8 AM to 12 noon today (26) and as a result, clinical and outpatient activities were hampered.

The doctors were on a token strike in protest of a circular issued by the Treasury stating that they will not pay overtime above their basic salary.
