Angry locals attack cops in Akkaraipattu; Police open fire injuring one man

COLOMBO (News 1st); One person was injured after a police officer opened fire to control a tense confrontation between locals in Akkaraipattu and Police Officers on Thursday (5) night.

According to Sri Lanka Police, 10 police officers and two other people were injured following a tense altercation at the Palamunai Roadblock in Akkaraipattu, in the east of Sri Lanka.

A senior police officer told News 1st that a man had passed through the checkpoint without complying with the orders to stop and that he was not wearing a helmet.

He said the man in the motorcycle had slipped moments late.

Based on this incident a group of locals visited the checkpoint and a confrontation with police officers had taken place.

At that time one police officer had opened fire, resulting in one local getting injured.

The OIC of the Akkaraipattu Police and nine other officers were injured when they were attacked by a group of angry locals.
