COLOMBO (News 1st); A group of protestors from the GotaGogama protest site met the Chairman of the Election Commission Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchihewa.
A spokesman for the Election Commission said that they had a lengthy discussion on the current crisis in the country.
Protesters had raise concerns over the Elections Commissions role on what kind of action or intervention it can take to resolve the current crisis.
The spokesman further stated that the protesters requested the Chairman of the Elections Commission to intervene to draw the attention of the people and other political parties to the current situation.
As the country faces an economic crisis, Sri Lankans are exercising their freedom of speech and assembly to a degree unprecedented in the country’s history.
Protesters accuse the present government of corruption, nepotism, and authoritarianism, while leading the country into an economic abyss.
The main reason for the protests is the country’s dire economic crisis, the worst since Independence.
