COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers' Union saying that the number of hours of power cuts should be extended, as one of the generators at the Norochcholai Power Plant is out of order.

On Tuesday (3), the CEB announced that a technical breakdown was experienced in one of the 270MW generators in the Norochcholai Power Plant.

The CEB Engineers Union said power cuts are experienced for 3 hours and 20 minutes at present, due to the breakdown it will have to be extended for 5 hours.

On Tuesday (3) Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera stated that it will take another five days to restore the generator.

Anil Ranjith, the Chairman of the CEB Engineers Union said sourcing fuel for power generation would be costly given the situation, and the Mahaweli Authority had agreed to provide hydro power to meet the demand.

However, if Sri Lanka does not experience sufficient rainfall, the situation would be worse, he warned.
