COLOMBO (News 1st); The Human Right Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) said it intends to summon the police officers involved in the arrest of the protesters for an inquiry.
A group of 12 protestors were arrested at the Parliament round-about on Wednesday (4) afternoon.
The Human Right Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has given directions to the police to ensure that the respect the citizen’s fundamental right of speech and expression, and will not suppress peaceful protests.
The IGP is also required to issue appropriate directions and instructions to all Officer’s in Charge of police stations that criticism of the parliamentarians is, per se, a permissible exercise of the freedom of speech and expression under Article 14(1) (a), said the Human Rights Commission.
