21st Constitutional Amendment to be presented to Cabinet tomorrow

COLOMBO (News 1st); Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to present the draft 21st constitutional amendment bill with proposals submitted by political parties, to the cabinet tomorrow (25).

A top Government Spokesperson says that the new cabinet will hold its first meeting at 5 pm tomorrow under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya, United National Party and the independent group of MPs in Parliament submitted their proposals for the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, to the speaker on Friday (22).

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena says the proposals were handed over to the Prime Minister to be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers.

After the Cabinet approves the proposal, it will be referred to the Legal Draftsman's Department to adopt a resolution proposing the 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

The Speakers adds that the 21st Amendment to the Constitution is set to be tabled in Parliament soon.

At the parliamentary sessions on Friday (22), the party leaders agreed to repeal the 20th Amendment to the Constitution and the shortcomings of the 19th Amendment, to bring in the 21st Amendment to the Constitution with positive changes.
