COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lankan healthcare trade unions warned of a serious risk due to the shortage of medicines and medical supplies.

"The Sri Lankan health sector is appealing for humanitarian aid to survive," said Ravi Kumudesh, the head of the Medical Laboratory Technologists Association, adding that this is because Sri Lanka's default had pushed it to a position where it cannot service its debt.

The Chairman of the Government Nurses Association, Saman Ratnapriya alleged that if the government is stating that they could not place the purchase orders for medicines a year before, it clearly shows their failure.
