Increase in fatal accidents during past week: Police

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa states that an increase in fatal accidents has been noted in the recent festive season. 

Speaking to News 1st, the Police Spokesperson said that the Police had been requesting the public to not to drive while intoxicated, and to drive in a careful manner. 

However, the Police Spokesperson noted that 57 fatal accidents have taken place from 9th to 16th April, while 59 lives have been claimed due to fatal accidents. 

However, the total number of deaths accumulate to 71 with the addition of 12 others who were involved in accidents, and died during the given period of time. 

Moreover, 15 people have died due to drowning since April 9th, he added. 

Therefore, the Police Spokesperson cautioned the public to be careful when engaging in leisure activities, especially when visiting a certain area.
