Journalist Roel Raymond files FR against State of Emergency, Curfew, & Social Media Ban

COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo-based journalist Roel Raymond has filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition against the State of Emergency that was declared on April 1st, against the curfew imposed on April 2nd as well as the restriction on social media that came into effect later that day.

In a social media statement, she said that "I believe these decisions infringed on my fundamental rights as well as the fundamental rights of the public."

Secretary to the President Gamini Senerath, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Kamal Gunaratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Jagath Alwis, IGP C.D. Wickramaratne, the Attorney General, the TRC are cited as respondents in the application.

President's Counsel M. A. Sumanthiran will appear for Roel Raymond with Dr. Gehan Gunatilleke, instructed by Mohan Balendra.
