COLOMBO (News 1st); Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that the tea industry is facing a crisis due to the government’s ad-hoc decision to do away with chemical fertilizers.
He was speaking at an event in Matara on Thursday (17), to discuss issues faced by the tea estates in the districts.
Many large and medium-scale tea factory owners in the Matara District participated in this event.
One Tea Factory Owner stated that the Government instead of lending support for businesses, is completely destroying the industry.
“We used to buy fertilizer for Rs. 1,500/-. Now it’s around Rs. 8.500/-,” said the businessman.
