COLOMBO (News 1st); A petition was filed with the Supreme Court on Monday (14) challenging the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Amendment Bill that was produced in Parliament to amend the Prevention of Terrorisms (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979.
The special petition seeks a Supreme Court ruling that the bill violates the constitution of Sri Lanka.
It was filed by Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu of the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA).
The petition notes if the bill is to be passed as a law, it needs to be passed by a 2/3 majority in Parliament or by a referendum.
