COLOMBO (News 1st); The Samagi Jana Balawegaya on Wednesday (09) requested for a Parliamentary debate on the new Surcharge Tax Bill that is drawing in the EPF and the ETF, claiming that the move is unacceptable.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa pointed out that the Government is trying to exploit the working class.

SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella requesting for the debate alleged that there is a double taxation process carried out on the EPF/ETF as per the new Bill and it is unfair by the beneficiaries.

However, Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena on the same matter pointed out, “The Inland Revenue Act that existed during the previous tenure of Mahinda Rajapaksa is not the one that is in existence today. It was amended by the Yahapalana Government. During the Yahapalana rule, all the tax exemptions and relaxations were removed by this Act. The recommendations that we get right now are all based on your doings.”

Minister Namal Rajapaksa pointed out, The Opposition is now acting as if they don’t know about it. Our Government does not mind having to debate on this matter."

The Opposition Leader said the Gazette regarding the 25% tax on the EPF/ETF profits was moved by the Government and not the Opposition.
