COLOMBO (News 1st); Prison inmates and their families now have the opportunity to report and complain against the unlawful conduct of Sri Lankan Prison Officers.

The Department of Prisons said complaints can be filed by calling 011 2 678 600.

Prisons Commissioner, and Prisons Spokesperson, Chandana Ekanayake told News 1st that the identity of those who make complaints will be kept a secret while assuring the confidentiality of their complaints.

At the same time, the Department of Prison has decided strictly not to consider the reinstatement of prison officers who are interdicted for corruption, harassment against prisoners, until their disciplinary inquiry and court proceedings are over.

Prisons Spokesperson Chandana Ekanayake told News 1st that retaining such officers would have a negative impact on the Department of Prisons and could tarnish the excellent service rendered by a majority of the prison officers.

He said that prison officers guilty of misconduct will be discharged from service or will be penalized.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons has informed all Prison Superintendents in this regard, said the spokesperson.
