Government open to going to IMF: Minister (Dr) Ramesh

COLOMBO (News 1st); Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr Ramesh Pathirana on Tuesday (01) stated that the Government is open to going for an IMF program to restructure the debt of the country.

Responding to a question at the Cabinet Media Briefing on Tuesday (01), Dr Pathirana stated that although the matter itself was not discussed at the Cabinet meeting held on Monday (31), it was a discussion which took place for some time. 

However, the Minister said that the Government has been in discussion with the IMF for a certain period of time to restructure the debt of the country, out of which a majority were taken during the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa's time. 

"We are open to all institutions and all ideas. Hopefully we will be able to manage the current crisis about six months down the line," he added.
