COLOMBO (News 1st); The DIG in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, Indika Hapugoda states that an increase in accidents on expressways has been reported as of recently.
In 2019, 492 road accidents have occurred on expressways, out of which twelve have proven to be fatal, and 12 people have lost their lives.
The number of accidents which occurred on expressways in 2020 is 365, while 5 people lost their lives.
The DIG in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, Indika Hapugoda said that there were 493 road accidents on the expressways in 2021 and 9 persons lost their lives.
He emphasized that drivers must be careful about the condition of their vehicles when entering the highway, and should never park or turn a vehicle on the highway.
Citing the accident which took place on Saturday (29), the DIG stated that the first lorry which was involved in an accident at around 3 in the morning was being kept stationary while a similar lorry coming from behind collided with the vehicle, that caused for the driver to fall out of the seat of the vehicle and die.
Further elaborating that any driver has to keep the distance and travel on the expressway, the DIG said that there are also support teams who can call 1969 and obtain their assistance at any time.
