DO NOT repair vehicles on expressways, warning from police after after fatal crash

COLOMBO (News 1st); Two people died in fatal motor accident along the outer circular road between Kadawatha and Kaduwela on Saturday (29).

Police Media Spokesman SSP Attorney at law Nihal Thalduwa stated that the accident occurred due to a collision between two lorries.

He said that one lorry was parked on the side of the road while the driver of the vehicle had been replacing a damaged tyre, when another lorry collided into it.

The lorry driver was thrown from the vehicle and died from the impact, while the passenger of the vehicle died after the lorry was engulfed in flames.

The Police Spokesperson said that the lorry driver who was replacing the tyre was arrested over the incident.

Speaking further, SSP Nihal Thalduwa urged the public to always contact emergency services via 1969 immediately after ANY BREAKDOWN when travelling on expressways.

He emphasized that it is paramount that drivers and passengers refrain from carrying out any repairs until the emergency services arrive and secure the location.

As there have been many reports of deaths owing to road accidents and drowning in recent days, public has been urged to to practice extreme caution when travelling and when attending to repairs.
