COLOMBO (News 1st); The Department of Archeology states that a team of officers were sent to inspect the tomb found during the construction of the Our Lady of Assumption’s Church at Bolawatta, Wennappuwa.

Its Director General, Senior Professor Anura Manatunga said that instructions have been issued to let the tomb remain in place without any changes.

He also said that steps would be taken to open the tomb after seeking the consent of the church authorities.

Responding to a query by News First as to whether the remains of Rev. Fr. Jacome Gonsalves, is buried at the cemetery, the Director General of Archeology stated that a definite conclusion could be drawn from the evidence obtained after opening the tomb.

The Our Lady of Assumption’s Church has been a place of worship with a history of over 300 years.
