Thirukkovil Police shooting: Special investigation under IGP orders underway

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Special Investigation Unit of the Police Headquarters has commenced an investigation into the Four Police personnel who were killed in a shooting at the Thirukkovil Police Station in Ampara on Friday (24).

The Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the investigation is being carried out on the orders of the IGP.

Meanwhile, the Ampara Police SSP has appointed an Assistant Superintendent of Police and a Senior OIC to investigate the incident as well.

The postmortem examination of the bodies of the four deceased Police personnel is also due to be conducted at the Ampara General Hospital on Sunday (26).

Two Police Sergeants and two Police Constables were shot dead by a Police motor traffic sergeant at around 11:00 p.m. on Friday (24) night.

Several Police personnel at Thirukkovil Police were injured in the shooting.

The Police Sergeant who carried out the shooting subsequently fled the area with two T-56 weapons and 19 rounds of ammunition to his house in Athimale and later surrendered to the Athimale Police Station.
