Fishermen hit hardest by fuel price increase

COLOMBO (News 1st); The fuel price increase had hit the fishing industry the hardest, said fishermen to SJB MP Dilip Wedaarachchi, who visited Orruwella, Thangalla to inquire into the plight of fishermen.

The fishermen, speaking to the MP stated that the prices of fuel and other goods were increased, and the fisherman currently have no way to get by.

They also demanded for concessions from the Government.

SJB MP Dilip Wedaarachchi, speaking further, stated that the Government increased the fuel price twice, even at a time when the Finance Minister left the country.

Pointing out that the people have to pay the price for every mistake made by the Government, MP Wedaarachchi said that the Government continues to live in luxury from the taxes charged from the people.

Furthermore, the fishermen stated that as a result of the fuel price increase, the costs of setting sail has increased by Rs.10,00 per day, and a single trip of Multi-day fishing vessel has risen by Rs. 60,000.
